Drivers are facing hour-long delays on the M62 while emergency repairs take place after a lorry crash.

The vehicle hit the railings on a bridge on the A49 Newton Road, in Warrington, which caused the fuel to spill over the motorway.

The M62 has been closed in both directions within junction nine since the spill earlier.

A National Highways spokesman said the road will be surfaced later and traffic is being diverted onto exit and entry slip roads.

The agency said workers had been repairing the barrier on the bridge along the A49 between Warrington and Wigan, which has since reopened to traffic.

That work is expected to be completed by late afternoon.

Cheshire Police said there were no reports of injuries after the lorry crash.
