A 16-year-old girl was raped in a town centre on New Year's Day, police have said.

The victim was approached by two men while she was walking on Market Place in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, shortly before 01:00 GMT.

Staffordshire Police said the men took her down an alleyway near the Royal Oak pub before one of them raped her.

People came to her aid following the incident and the girl was being supported by specialist officers, a police spokesperson added.

One of the suspects was described as having a comb over hairstyle with the sides shaved and some facial hair.

The other was wearing glasses, a black beanie, a red hoodie and had a moustache.

Potential witnesses, including people who were at the Royal Oak pub at the time, have been asked to contact police.
