A man has pleaded guilty to murdering another man who died following an assault.

Adrian Martino Wright appeared at Newcastle Crown Court where he admitted killing Allen Adeyemi Tejan.

Mr Tejan, 40, was found at an address on Lily Street in Sunderland in April with serious head injuries and died in hospital the following day.

Wright, 53, of no fixed address, who also fled the scene, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 30 September.

Northumbria Police said Mr Tejan was found after officers responded to a report of an assault at 08:40 BST on 24 April.

Wright fled the scene but was caught by officers and charged with murder, the force said.

Det Ch Insp Matt Steel of Northumbria Police thanked Mr Tejan's family for the "strength they have shown" since his death.

"Wright’s despicable actions speak volumes," he said.

"This was a brutal and senseless attack, and he attempted to flee the scene to escape justice.

"Nothing will ever bring Allen back, but I hope today marks the first step towards the closure his loved ones deserve."
