A mother and nine-month-old baby were rescued by firefighters from a flat in Derbyshire after it went up in flames.

Fire crews were called to the property on the A5250 Burton Road in Derby on Thursday at about 23:20 GMT.

They used a ladder to rescue the mother and baby from the building before they had suffered any injuries.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation found the most likely cause was a candle.

The service's group manager, Lee Williams, said: "On arrival at the scene crews could see the mother and her baby at a second-floor window.

"Following a quick brief from police colleagues who were already in attendance, a fire crew wearing breathing apparatus was immediately deployed into the smoke logged property to fight and extinguish the fire.

"A further crew quickly pitched a ladder up to the window and carefully brought the baby down to safety first, closely followed by the mother."
