Passengers are facing major disruption on Greater Manchester's tram network due to a "low hanging overhead line" in the city centre.

All services on Metrolink's Ashton-under-Lyne route have been suspended because of the issue on Portland Street in Manchester.

There are no tram services currently calling at Shudehill, Market Street, Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly, Transport for Greater Manchester said.

Some bus services have also been diverted away from the area.

The following service changes are in place:

  • Bury - Altrincham services will travel via Exchange Square

  • Bury - Victoria

  • Altrincham-Crumpsall via Exchange Square

  • Airport Line services will operate via Exchange Square

  • Eccles Line services will operate Eccles - Cornbrook

These services are currently unaffected:

  • East Didsbury - Rochdale

  • Trafford Centre - Deansgate-Castlefield

TfGM apologised to commuters on X and said there was "no timeframe at the moment" for the problem to be resolved.

It advised passengers to check its website for further updates, external.
