An investigation has been launched after a 20-year-old man died when he became unwell at a nightclub.

He was taken to hospital by emergency services from Hidden nightclub on Mary Street in Manchester at about 02:30 BST on Sunday before he passed away.

Greater Manchester Police said efforts to establish the cause of his death were underway.

In a statement, the venue said it was "deeply saddened" by his death, and passed on "heartfelt sympathies" to the man's family and friends.

'Heartbroken'

An event at Hidden on Sunday was called off following the 20-year-old's death as a "mark of respect", organisers said.

The decision was also taken to allow the venue time to evaluate the "safety and well-being" of customers following the incident, they said.

"Hidden has always been a place for people to come together, enjoy music and culture in a safe space and we are heartbroken by this incident.

"We will continue to assist the police with their inquiries."
