College pays tribute to teenager killed in crash

A teenager who died in a car crash at the weekend has been described by his college as a “caring and considerate" young man who loved sport.

Dafydd Hûw Craven-Jones, 18, died after a single-vehicle crash on Saturday on Cannock Road, Penkridge, Staffordshire Police said.

Mr Craven-Jones was driving a Ford Ka and the front-seat passenger Morgan Jones, 17, also died. Both teenagers were from Wrexham.

Vicky Pritt-Roberts, acting head of Ellesmere College in Shropshire, said Mr Craven-Jones' death had left everyone at the school "shocked".

Two girls, both 17, were also seriously hurt in the collision and on Tuesday officers said they remained in hospital, with one in a critical condition.

Staffordshire Police have been contacted for an update about their condition.

'Saddest of times'

Mrs Pritt-Roberts said Mr Craven-Jones had joined the independent school in 2017 and played in their rugby, football and cricket teams.

She added that he was “generous with his time” when it came to coaching younger pupils and planned to join the RAF after completing sixth-form.

“[His] caring and considerate nature towards his friends made him a very special person,” she said in a statement released by the college.

The acting head added that his death marked “the saddest of times”.

A Welsh flag and floral tributes were left at the scene after the crash

Both Mr Craven-Jones’ and Mr Jones’ families paid tribute to the teenagers on Tuesday, releasing statements via the police.

Mr Craven-Jones' family said he was "a beautiful soul" and “the baby of the family”, while Mr Jones' family described him as "a very popular young man".

Tributes and a Welsh flag were also left at the scene of the crash.

Staffordshire Police said on Tuesday they were continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and specialist officers were supporting the young people’s families.
