No investigation into man's Tube track death by IOPC

An investigation into the conduct of Metropolitan Police officers is not going to be carried out following the death of a man who ran onto Tube tracks during a police pursuit.

Officers were called to reports of a fight and criminal damage outside Colindale London Underground station, north-west London, at about 01:00 BST on 19 May.

After seeing a man had entered the Tube station, the Met said officers had tried to detain him but he jumped onto the tracks and was fatally injured.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which said the man had been struck by a train, added it was handing the matter back to the Met because "it was unclear what more officers could have done to prevent the incident".

British Transport Police (BTP) is investigating the circumstances of the death and says it continues to support the man's family.

A mandatory referral was made to the IOPC by the Met due to the contact the officers had with the man before his death.

'Tragic incident'

The Met said following an assessment, including a review of the officers’ body-worn video footage, the IOPC decided an investigation was not required and referred the matter back to the force.

It added detectives from the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards made an assessment and concluded no further investigation was required.

Supt Lorraine Busby-McVey said: “It is only right the matter was reviewed by the IOPC given the circumstances.

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the man who very sadly lost his life.

"Our colleagues from BTP will now progress the investigation and we will be providing statements from the officers involved to assist their inquiries.”
