Anthony Mathurin described his experience on the show as surreal and exhilarating

Traitors competitor Anthony Mathurin said contestants must expect the unexpected to survive in the game.

On Friday he was booted off the BBC One show based at Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

The show involves 22 strangers who have to "banish" the traitors among the group before the end of the game.

The 45-year-old from Birmingham has a professional background in strategy as a chess coach. He described the moment he met the rest of the cast as a "surreal, exhilarating, fabulous" experience.

"You've got to be ready to rip up any plan you have on the spot and concoct a new one," he told BBC Radio WM.

After watching the first series he decided to apply for the show because, he said, it had him "written all over it".

"I wanted to go all the way you know, I wanted to be part of the last people standing," he said.

Mr Mathurin said it was disappointing to be out of the show, although being banished was all part of the game.

"It's a really tough game and it's all about survival," he said.

He said he was rooting for contestant Harry, whom he named "H Bomb".
