The first phase of an upgrade to the electricity infrastructure in St Peter Port has been completed early, Guernsey Electricity has confirmed.

The first phase, which had been due to end on 20 May, included replacing cables at the end of their working life and upgrading the infrastructure in the Arcade and finished on Wednesday.

Previously, retailers said the work should have been carried out after the tourism season due to the potential impact on trade.

Mike Lloyd, head of distribution at Guernsey Electricity, said engineers had been working tirelessly to deliver the first phase of the project as safely and efficiently as possible.

He said: "This is essential for our energy infrastructure and aimed at increasing network capacity, whilst improving the overall security of the electricity supply in St Peter Port.

"We are naturally pleased that this phase has finished earlier than planned, and I would also credit the team for the quality of work undertaken."

The second phase of the work is due to start on 13 May, which is set to affect the high street only.
