Works start to 'future-proof' electricity network

Guernsey Electricity is starting work to "future-proof" the network in the centre of St Peter Port on Monday.
The first phase, planned to end on May 20, includes replacing end-of-life cables and upgrading the infrastructure in the Arcade.
The company warned that the Arcade and the High Street will be affected but said there will be pedestrian access via temporary walkways.
The second phase of the works focuses on the High Street and is planned to run from 20 May until 19 July.
Essential works
Mike Lloyd, head of distribution at Guernsey Electricity, said: “The project is essential for our energy infrastructure, and is aimed at increasing the network capacity and improving the overall security of the electricity supply in town.
"These works are designed to future-proof the area to avoid major works in the future around this location.”
During the second phase, the High Street will stay open, but part of it will be barriered off to create a safe working area to undertake the works.
There will be no vehicular access during this phase.
Deliveries will still be able to be made to all retail premises along the High Street, but will have to be walked past the barriered area containing the works.
