A digger has damaged a gas main, forcing homes to be evacuated within 100m (328ft) of the area and a road to be closed.

Police said Millgreen Road in Amesbury, Wiltshire, has been closed and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service had two crews on scene.

The fire service was called at around 13:19 BST today and have asked the public to avoid the area.

Police have a cordon in place and said the evacuation was a "safety precaution."

The fire service explained the problem was being assessed by the SGN gas network, with engineers working to isolate the supply.
