The family of a man who died after being hit by a car while he was trying to help a stranger in Sheffield has been sent condolences by the city's councillors.

Chris Marriott, 46, was killed in the crash on 27 December as he tended to a woman lying unconscious on College Close in Burngreave.

Several others were injured in the incident, including off-duty midwife and Labour councillor Alison Norris, who subsequently underwent surgery.

Tributes were paid to Mr Marriott at Wednesday's full meeting of Sheffield City Council - the first to be held since his death.

Lord Mayor Colin Ross said: "Mr Marriott’s wife is a council officer and we would like to send our condolences to the Marriott family."

He added that councillors also wanted to send "best wishes of the council" to Mrs Norris, with the hope she would be "back in circulation before too long".

Hassan Jhangur, 23, who was charged with Mr Marriott's murder and five counts of attempted murder, is next due to appear in court on 25 March.
