Crews have spent several hours trying to put out a large fire at a recycling centre.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to Bridge Works, Cadwell Lane, Hitchin, at 20:43 GMT on Monday.

A number of crews attended and smoke was affecting the nearby railway line, it added.

Staff on the site created a fire break using on-site machinery.

The service said the fire was largely put out by 09:00 and that crews would remain to dampen down and tackle hot spots within the pile of waste.
