Officers get award for saving stab victim's life

The officers will collect their awards at the end of the month

Two police officers are to get bravery awards for their actions in saving a victim's life.

PC Ben Chilcott and PC Callum Dee rescued a man who was being stabbed repeatedly at a house in Wolverhampton on 4 January 2024.

The pair will receive the West Midlands Police Federation's bravery award for Wolverhampton on 30 January.

"There wasn't a lot of time to think about things, we just acted on instinct," said PC Chilcott.

On the day of the incident, police received a report that someone was behaving aggressively and was armed with a knife and a hammer.

The officers could see straight into the property through a window, the Police Federation, which represents officers, said.

"As soon as we walked up to that window the suspect grabbed the injured party to the floor and started stabbing him to the chest," said Mr Chilcott.

"He stabbed him quite a few times.

"We looked at each other and knew we had to do something. We went into the house and did what we had to do."

The pair ran in and used PAVA spray, an incapacitant, which caused the attacker to drop the knife.

After a struggle, the suspect was detained outside.

The victim survived, and passed on his thanks to the pair in court, the Police Federation said.

"To hear him say, 'you saved my life'... was reward enough," said PC Dee.

"To know you've done that for someone is a really good feeling.

"He was just a normal bloke, but something horrible happened to him and we managed to save his life, effectively."
