A mother is worried her son "won't get justice" after his leg was broken and he suffered cuts and bruises when he was hit by a car outside a primary school in Birmingham.

Azmina was with her son Abbas, 10, when he was hit and injured while crossing the busy Stratford Road outside Hall Green Junior School on 11 October.

Two months on, Azmina has claimed West Midlands Police has been "ignoring her" and said the family felt abandoned due to a lack of communication.

The force said it was investigating, and after being approached by the BBC, has visited the family to provide an update.

Abbas was taken to hospital with a fractured lower left leg and cuts and bruises to his face, hands and legs.

He was kept in for observation for six hours before he was discharged.

Azmina said her son had been very anxious about going back to school but he has since made a physical recovery.

The BBC understands police spoke to a driver at the scene, but Azmina said she had not heard anything since.

"They haven't been cooperative at all; there has been no support, no aftercare, no liaising, nothing from the police," she said.

"It just makes you wonder, is anything going to happen, or will it just get brushed under the carpet?

"This is quite a big thing happening outside a school to a young child; they should take it seriously."

For campaigners, road safety outside schools in the city is a huge concern.

Mat MacDonald from Better Streets for Birmingham said: "It's an incredibly hostile place for pedestrians, which is especially true for children who are the most vulnerable people when it comes to collisions.

"What we urgently need to see is investment in the safety of those who are outside vehicles in spaces like this."

After being contacted by the BBC, officers from West Midlands Police visited the family to take witness and impact statements.

The force confirmed no arrested had been made.

"We are investigating after a collision on Stratford Road, Hall Green, on 11 October, where a child was hit by a car," a statement said.

"Officers carried out enquiries at the scene and took the details of the driver involved.

"CCTV has also been recovered and reviewed, and details of witnesses taken.

"We understand how upsetting this has been for the child's family and will be making contact with the family to update them on the investigation."
