The introduction of a new sports travel fund has been welcomed by the Jersey Football Association (FA).

FA CEO Tim Pryor described the £300,000 fund as "excellent".

It comes after the States of Jersey agreed to a plan from Deputy Raluka Kovacs to set up the fund on Thursday to help sportspeople when competing over seas.

Mr Pryor said: "Those costs add up and these people are proudly representing our island overseas, and I think it is going to be excellent that more money is coming their way."

He added: "It can help competitors off-island to better themselves, challenge themselves and test themselves."

The fund would allow athletes competing internationally the ability to claim up to £1,000 in travel expenses from 2025, organisers said.

Kovacs had initially called for a fund of £500,000 but accepted a compromise from ministers for a reduced fund.

She said: "We are very quick to celebrate when these hard-working individuals bring medals for Jersey but often overlook their sacrifice and the support they need to get there."
