The States has agreed to create a £300,000 travel fund for Jersey's athletes

Jersey athletes who have been chosen to represent their island abroad will be able to claim up to £1,000 in travel expenses from 2025.

The States agreed to a plan from Deputy Raluka Kovacs to set up a £300,000 fund on Thursday.

Kovacs had initially called for a fund of £500,000 but accepted a compromise from ministers for a reduced fund.

She said: "We are very quick to celebrate when these hard working individuals bring medals for Jersey but often overlook their sacrifice and the support they need to get there."

The deputy added: "Many talented individuals are left feeling that their hard work and sacrifices may be in vain if the financial barriers prevent them from crossing the water to showcase their skills."
