A mum in a park with her two children was attacked by another woman and a man was stamped on by three young males when he intervened, police said.
The attack was reported to have happened close to the fountain in Albert Park, Middlesbrough, following a row on the afternoon of 9 August.
The woman was punched "multiple times" by the other woman, who then elbowed one of her children in the face when they tried to help, Cleveland Police said.
The female attacker was in her late 30s or early 40s with dark brown hair, while the three males wore dark-coloured tracksuits and spoke with Middlesbrough accents.
The victims did not know their attackers, the force said.
It has appealed for witnesses and anyone with footage of the incident, which happened between 16:45 BST and 17:15 BST, to come forward.
