A sheep has died after being chased over a Cornish cliff edge by an "aggressive person", police have said.

An investigation was launched by Devon and Cornwall Police after it received reports of the incident in the Polly Joke area of Newquay on 27 July.

The force said officers were told people confronted the suspect, who was described as "aggressive".

A police spokesperson said the incident has had a huge impact on the community, adding: "We can't imagine why anyone would willingly chase or harm an innocent animal."

Officers believe a number of people witnessed the incident but some had not come forward to them.

They added: "Behaviour like this is unacceptable and we will continue to work alongside the investigating officers to bring the offender to justice."

The force's rural affairs team is working closely with the local neighbourhood team as part of the investigation and officers have urged anyone with relevant information to contact them or Crimestoppers.
