A sheep has died after being chased over a Cornish cliff edge by an "aggressive person", police have said.
An investigation was launched by Devon and Cornwall Police after it received reports of the incident in the Polly Joke area of Newquay on 27 July.
The force said officers were told people confronted the suspect, who was described as "aggressive".
A police spokesperson said the incident has had a huge impact on the community, and added: "We can't imagine why anyone would willingly chase or harm an innocent animal."
PC Lee Skinner from the Devon and Cornwall Police Rural Affairs team, external said the force was appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or had any information to come forward.
"It's a very sad incident, it's a very emotive subject and very sad what's happened, but we do need to get to the bottom of it and see if there is fault," he said.
"Just because something is reported on social media in one way, we need to get to the bottom of what actually happened and the best way for us to do that is speak to the actual witnesses that have seen it happen."
