Westmorland and Furness Council has lodged plans to itself to build a waste collection depot.

It is seeking a "lawful development certificate" for permission to change the use of council-owned land in the north of Barrow.

The site, south of Sandscale Park Road and close to Sowerby Business Park, was previously used as a construction compound relating to a solar array development.

The proposed depot would replace the current one on Salthouse Road, which is due to be demolished as part of the Barrow Marina Village regeneration.

The application stated relocating the depot facilities would be "critical to facilitate the regeneration of Barrow Marina Village", the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

If a change of use were to be granted, the new depot would accommodate four buildings, bin storage and parking for cars and cleaning vehicles.

According to the application, the operation of the depot would not have "a significant effect upon the qualifying features" of Morecambe Bay or Duddon Estuary.

A public consultation is due to end on 11 September.
