Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for new recruits

A county fire service has launched a campaign to recruit full-time crew members.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) is aiming to add at least 20 new firefighters to its ranks.

Mark Preece, chief fire officer, said that being a firefighter is a "rewarding and fulfilling role" and encouraged people from all backgrounds to apply.

GFRS said those applying must be over the age of 18, be reasonably fit, and live within a 50 mile radius of the Gloucestershire border.

A report earlier this year found that the service needed to "do more" around fire safety after it was ranked as inadequate or requiring improvement in nine out of 11 areas.

GFRS said it had been working to improve on these areas and hoped that new recruits would help its progress.

"The recruitment of more firefighters will help us to continue our improvement journey," said Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member with responsibility for the service, Dave Norman.

“As a former firefighter myself, I know that being involved in the fire and rescue service can give a great sense of pride, knowing you are making a difference in your community."

The application period runs until 18 November.
