Two men have been jailed for taking part in this summer's riots.

Unrest broke out during a protest in Middlesbrough on 4 August, with violence police described as "staggering".

Paul Smith was seen pushing a bin towards a police cordon on Ayresome Street in the town, while Rosh Mahmood was seen holding a wooden plank.

Smith, 24, of St Catherine's Court, Middlesbrough, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on Monday to 22 months in prison in connection with one charge of violent disorder.

Mahmood, 21, of Victoria Road, Middlesbrough, was sentenced to six months in prison at the same court for possession of a weapon in a public place.

Cleveland Police said officers saw him pick up the plank and head towards other rioters before they detained him.
