A housing development which will see more than 320 properties built on the edge of a town has been approved, despite concerns around public rights of way.

Persimmon Severn Valley said it would build 323 homes over two phases on land south of the A39 Quantock Road near Bridgwater, Somerset.

Durleigh Parish Council criticised the proposals, saying the site lacked well-lit and safe walking and cycling routes.

Somerset Council approved the plans at a meeting on Tuesday, subject to recommendations to add improved access links.

Developers initially planned to build more than 350 homes but submitted revised plans

The developer also initially proposed more than 350 homes for the site, but reduced this under revised plans.

Concerns were also raised over the planned number of affordable homes, with Persimmon Severn Valley cutting this from 30% to 10%.

The proposal would see any left over money for road infrastructure redirected to contribute to affordable homes elsewhere, external.

Prior to the planning meeting, councillor Tim Mander from Bridgwater Town Council said: "Affordability in housing is crucial to the people of Bridgwater as there's not enough that people can afford to buy."

A spokesperson for Persimmon Severn Valley said the housing levels have been set following an independent assessment, "ensuring the project is viable and maximises community benefit".

It also said the proposal would also include £2m for education services in the area and £2m for the council to deliver off-site affordable housing.
