'PM to defy Trump' and 'Apple in UK privacy row'

Sir Keir Starmer is set to "defy Trump with new aid for Ukraine", according to the Daily Telegraph. The prime minister plans to announce both new military aid and fresh sanctions on Russia on Monday, the third anniversary of Russia's invasion, the paper says. He is then due to visit the US president in Washington DC on Thursday.

"Starmer seeks to calm Europe's row with Trump" is the main headline on the Guardian's front page. Sir Keir's visit to Trump is aimed at "cooling an escalating transatlantic row" after the American leader sharply criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"Russian links to drone sightings over secret UK bases" make the lead on the i Paper. It says it can reveal the movements of three "individuals with suspected links to the Kremlin", two of whom are "believed to have worked as seasonal fruit pickers".

An apology to any poodles offended by comparisons to Donald Trump in his relationship with Vladimir Putin makes the lead on the Daily Star (geddit?). Among other things, the dogs are "not orange", it notes under a cartoon of the Russian president out walking the leader of the free world.

"Apple in UK privacy row" the Times reports after the corporation took the unprecedented step of removing its highest-level data security tool from customers, following a government demand for access to user data.

Similarly, "Apple closes secure iCloud system" is the main headline in the Financial Times. The move escalates a "confrontation over a secret government demand to access user data". Elsewhere, "social media cheapskates" could be "starved out" of top London restaurants as they bring in deposits and minimum spends.

Elton John and Simon Cowell make the front page of the Daily Mail as they "join fight to stop AI giants stealing work for free". They are, the paper says, urging a rethink on ministers' "radical proposals to relax copyright rules".

A report in the Daily Express looks at the "agonising battle" of the parents of Ollie and Amelia Carroll, 14 and 11, to "secure funding for vital treatment to fight Batten disease". The incurable illness affects the nervous system, causing seizures, visual impairment, mobility loss and early death, according to the NHS. "'Our children deserve to live as much as anyone,'" the paper's headline says.

This year's Victory in Europe Day commemoration will be one "to remember", the Daily Mirror writes, with King Charles III leading the event on 8 May from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, 80 years after the end of World War Two in Europe.
The Daily Telegraph reports, external that Sir Keir Starmer will use the third anniversary of the start of the Ukraine war, on Monday, to announce new support for President Volodymyr Zelensky's administration. Sources have suggested to the paper that the prime minister will risk the ire of Donald Trump - who has been sharply critical of the Ukrainian leader - by announcing more military aid, new sanctions on more Russians, and a new scheme to track the money of oligarchs linked to Vladimir Putin. The paper says such action is in "stark contrast" to Trump's approach.
But, according to the Guardian - Sir Keir will not challenge the US president, external over his characterisation of Zelensky as a dictator, who started the war with Russia, during next week's visit to the US. It says the prime minister will aim to defuse the escalating war of words between the White House and its traditional allies in Europe on the trip. "It is always better to focus on the future than going over the arguments of the past," a British official tells the paper.
In his column in the Daily Mail, external, the former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, encourages readers to ignore Trump's "bizarre and ahistorical" language. Trump's intention is to get Putin to the negotiating table, Johnson believes.
The I paper claims three Russians, two of whom posed as seasonal fruit pickers, travelled around eastern England in a way which suggests a link to drone incursions at airbases last year, external. It says all three have suspected links to the Kremlin. One, who has regularly been present at the Russian Embassy in Germany, was metres from the perimeter at RAF Mildenhall during the drone activity in November.
An investigation in the Times has found drug dealers are selling weight loss jabs, external alongside Class A substances. It has also found ADHD medication - which is in short supply - and anti-anxiety tablets being offered. A spokesman for a drugs charity is quoted in the article as saying synthetic opioids have been found in apparently legitimate medication on the unregulated market.
The Financial Times reports that some London restaurants have begun to introduce a minimum spend, external - payable on booking - as they seek to address lost sittings and no-shows caused by bots booking and reselling seats. It reports that the aim is also to discourage social media figures from filming videos - in which they order one main dish and a larger number of cheaper side plates - reducing the amount they spend.
The Sun raises concerns about Amazon's takeover of the James Bond series, external. It has interviewed an unnamed TV executive who speaks about the "worrying" prospect of multiple actors playing the spy, in the various films and shows which may come from the new deal.
The Mirror has spoken to another unnamed insider, external, who speculates that the acquisition was prompted by the copyright on Ian Fleming's books expiring in 2035. The source says "they have a 10 year window to milk the franchise".
The Express pleads for no modern makeovers of the character, external, airing fears that Bond's vodka martinis might be substituted for oat milk protein shakes to "suit current tastes".
