Radio helps pupils fine tune communication skills

Students are using radio to help them with STEM training

Jersey students have been using radio to help with their science, technology, engineering and maths course.
Youngsters at Hautlieu are doing the STEM on Track programme, which teaches them how to design, build and race their own go-karts.
The course also includes work on marketing and communication, which is where the work with student radio was involved.
Groups of students produced and presented 15-minute shows at the school to showcase their work and get students across the college more interested in their projects.

Alex (l), Lauren (c) and Julia (r) all enjoyed the experience after some nerves at the start
Involved in one of the programmes were Lauren, 17, Alex, 17, and Julia, 16.
Lauren said: "It gives you a lot of life skills like communication.
"It just builds your confidence for everyday life."
Alex said: "I think radio is actually really fun, it was my first time today doing it, it's kind of cool that you're just using the mics and the headphones and making your own show."
Julia added: "It's important to develop confidence when speaking to others.
"Lots of different jobs use communication."
Students have been designing and branding their go-karts while being marked by staff at the college.
The group that ends the project with the highest marks will take their vehicle to a track in the UK where it will be raced against other schools.
They will be supported there by Enstone-based Formula One team Alpine FI Team and will learn more about potential careers in engineering.
