Kent Police say it is investigating a suspected arson attack on Get Ready Comics in Rochester High Street

A comic book shop owner in Kent has spoken of his ordeal after his business was damaged by fire in a suspected arson attack.

Paul Blakebrough, who runs Get Ready Comics in Rochester High Street, said he woke up to "many missed calls and messages" in the early hours of Tuesday about the blaze.

"I was so shocked about what had happened. But I was in fight or flight mode, knowing I had to go and quickly deal with the situation," he added.

Kent Police said it was investigating a suspected arson at a business premises in Rochester High Street, which happened between 05:00 and 05:25 BST on Tuesday.

"A fire is reported to have been started in a floral display at the entrance before it spread to the door frame and shop sign," a Kent Police spokesperson said.

Kent Police has also released CCTV images of a person who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

"Fortunately Kent Fire and Rescue Service came very quickly to extinguish the fire," Mr Blakebrough said.

"There are homes above the shop and fortunately no occupants were hurt."

He said the shop has reopened on Thursday.

"It's important we reopen as soon as possible. The shop has become a community place where people regularly meet up."

He added the fire had damaged the door and the panel above it, which were original fittings of the building from the 1980s.

"When I opened the door, a plume of smoke came out," Mr Blakebrough said. "I had to wipe down the inside of the shop because it was covered in soot."

"Not many stock was damaged, some had to be replaced but luckily did not cost a lot.

"However, the repairs to the front of the shop will cost thousands."

Mr Blakebrough said Get Ready Comics had been in Rochester for 10 years.

"It's not the first time my shop has been targeted, 10 days ago a window was smashed and several months ago someone sprayed graffiti outside the premises," he added.

Mr Blakebrough said he planned to install CCTV in his shop.

Kent Police says an investigation is under way and officers are urging anyone with information to contact them.
