Firefighters have put out a fire in a field.

Crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to a blaze near Godman Road, in Chadwell St Mary, Thurrock, at 16:35 BST on Sunday.

On arrival, crews said an area of approximately 150 metres by 30 metres of crops and bushes was alight. It was put out by 18:05.

Station manager, Scott Fretton, said: "The cause of the fire is undetermined but with more hot weather on the way we’d really encourage people to be extra cautious while everything is so dry."

Six crews worked with local farmers to create a fire break and they prevented the fire from spreading to nearby garages and surrounding fields.

Mr Fretton urged people to avoid having bonfires or disposable BBQs and to properly stub out cigarettes before discarding of them.

He also advised people to take litter home with them if they could not find a bin.

"If you see someone starting a fire, please call 999 immediately,” he said.
