An eight-year-old boy has suffered head injuries in a hit-and-run collision involving a quad bike.

South Yorkshire Police said the boy had been walking with his mother along Crookes Lane, in Carlton, at about 17:15 GMT on Sunday, when he was hit by the vehicle and knocked to the floor.

The force said the rider stopped briefly before leaving the scene.

A police spokesperson said the boy was taken to hospital with a bleed on the brain, but was "recovering well".

Police said the quad bike involved in the collision was one of two being driven in the direction Carlton Village Men's Club.

One of the quad bikes was red and black, and one rider was wearing a bright green helmet, the force said.

Both riders were reported to be in their late teens and wearing dark tracksuits and face coverings.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has relevant footage of what happened has been asked to contact police.
