A new BMX pump track could be built in a Fenland town after plans were submitted.

Applicant Fenland District Council wanted to build the circuit in West End Park in the town of March, Cambridgeshire.

A letter from Cambridgeshire County Council was attached to the planning application, which outlined the work carried out to get the project to this point, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

It explained ‘The Wheelz Project’ was set up three years ago by a small group who consulted the community and designed a track.

The letter said the group had fundraised for the project, but had also worked with the county council to get “significant external funding”, including £100,000 from the Youth Investment Fund and construction company Mick George.

The county council said: “Built from dirt and asphalt the facility will be a gateway to developing a lifelong interest in a sport – not only cycling, but other wheeled sports like skateboarding, scooters, roller skating, and wheelchairs, helping to keep people active and healthy.

“It will be free to access [and] use and provide regular opportunities for riders to progress, gain confidence and most importantly have fun.”

The county council said in its letter that the funding from Mick George came with tight deadlines and needed to be spent by September this year.

However, the authority has confirmed that the funding deadline has been extended through to the new year.
