Mark Green, 45, is crocheting and knitting every day in November in memory of his grandfather

A church cafe volunteer has said he will knit for four hours each day in November in honour of his late grandfather who died of cancer.

Mark Green, from Ipswich, says he will make blankets and ponchos for a charity shop in aid of the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

The 45-year-old, who helps out at St Francis Church’s Peace Cafe for the elderly, will also produce mini stockings which will be sold at the church’s Christmas fair.

Mr Green, who crochets to help keep his anxiety and depression at bay, said: “It takes things off your mind and stops you worrying about stuff."

'Close to my heart'

Mr Green, who says he does his crocheting while watching Big Brother in the evenings, is taking on the challenge in memory of his grandfather Mark, who died in his 80s.

He said the family could not grieve properly at the time because "we were trying to be strong for our nan".

“Then when she died eight months later we were all in a big state," he explained.

“My dad got cancer as well so he always nags at me to wear a hat or make sure I have suncream on when I am in the sun - he is really scared that I might get it.

“So, it’s a cause that is close to my heart.”
