A New York City police officer - whose wife is pregnant with their third child - is among four people killed in a shooting inside a Midtown Manhattan high-rise during Monday rush hour.

Police say the suspect, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, travelled from Las Vegas but his motive is unclear. He was later found dead with a "self-inflicted" wound, police say, with more ammunition found in his car.

The gunman walked into the office building armed with a rifle before spraying bullets in the lobby and on an upper floor, police said.

The shooting - in the centre of the most populous US city - sent pedestrians running for cover as police warned of an active shooter.
