Islanders have been reminded to check their window insurance discs

Guernsey Police are warning islanders to check their vehicle insurance is in date after a "sharp increase" in motorists without insurance.

The force said motorists should check their window insurance discs to ensure they were in date.

Officers said the issue largely affected drivers between 18 and 25 who were found not to be displaying their insurance properly or driving with expired insurance.

People found driving without insurance could be fined and have their licence suspended for a minimum of 12 months, the force added.

Guernsey Police said: "We'd urge islanders not to rely on their insurance company to remind them that their insurance is expiring, as technically, the onus is not on them.

"These rules apply to any vehicle parked on or driving on a public road, whether in motion or not."
