Historic glasshouse restoration works to begin

The works on the upper glasshouse are anticipated to be completed later this year

Restoration works to what is thought to be one of the oldest greenhouses in Guernsey are set to begin next week.
The upper glasshouse at Candie Gardens is one of two glasshouses probably dating back to 1792.
With the lower glasshouse already in need of significant repair, the upper glasshouse has been prioritised to avoid the structure worsening and costs escalating, the States of Guernsey said.
The work is expected to be completed later this year and the gardens will be open as usual during the work.
As much of the glasshouse’s existing materials will be reused as possible.
Jim Robinson, the States’ director of natural environment, said: "It's really good to be in a position for these restoration works to begin. At their best, these glasshouses contribute to the beauty and historic interest of Candie Gardens.
"After we had the disappointment of receiving no formal interest in this work when we went out to tender in 2023, we spoke to potential contractors to help them understand the likely works involved.
"As a result, we're really pleased that this project was able to move forward, and we look forward to seeing this structure restored."
