A dispersal order has been put in place in Leicester following reports of fireworks being set off in the streets of the city centre.

Leicestershire Police said the order, inside the A594 St Matthews Way, St George's Way and Vaughan Way, bordering Bath Lane and All Saints Road, came into force at 7:33 GMT on Friday and will be in place until 7:33 on Sunday.

The force said the decision came after five men, all 18, were arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the reports of fireworks being set off in the early hours of Friday morning.

No injuries have been reported in relation to the reports and all five men remain in custody, police added.

Insp Ryan Ludlam said it was "extremely fortunate" that no injuries were reported from the "extremely dangerous and irresponsible behaviour" on Friday morning.

He said the dispersal order was in place to "prevent further offending".

"Officers will be on patrol in the area to ensure the order is enforced and to help keep our community safe," he added.
