Swimming pools in East Yorkshire have been awarded funds worth £500k to help them remain open as running costs spiral.

Bridlington will receive about £200,000 while Goole will get £125,000. Stamford Bridge's community pool will also be handed £8,000.

Swimming pool operators, such as councils, have faced huge rises in the cost of energy and chemicals following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart welcomed the grants, which also put £165,000 towards council pools in Hornsea and Withernsea.

The Conservative MP said: “I know many people appreciate our wonderful swimming pools and this huge investment secures that future.”

He added: “Swimming is a great way to stay fit, and our pools in Withernsea and Hornsea play a huge part of keeping adults and children alike active".

£20m was allocated to 196 swimming pools and leisure centres across the country by the government-funded body, Sport England.

The money was allocated to swimming pools and centres that were most at risk of closing or facing a significant reduction in service.
