About 40 jobs are at risk at a Highland company that manufactures specialist batteries.

AMTE Power, which is based in Thurso, has announced it is going into administration because it has insufficient funds to continue trading.

The company makes lithium ion batteries for use in high performance cars and heavy goods vehicles to help decarbonise travel and freight.

AMTE Power had been hoping to expand by opening a large new factory in Dundee before getting into financial difficulties.

Specialist business advisory firm FRP has been named as the intended administrator.

It is trying to find a buyer for the business.

FRP Director Richard Bloomfield described AMTE Power as a "leading player in the UK’s battery cell manufacturing capabilities".

He added that it had an important role in supporting the UK’s clean energy transition.

Mr Bloomfield said: "We expect interest from trade and institutional investors as we work diligently to secure a future for the business.”
