Businesses in East Yorkshire could get up to £50,000 to expand or develop their workforce.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been given £500,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund.

The money will be used to provide financial support to allow local companies to grow.

The council said it could be spent on buying new equipment or for farmers to diversify by developing tourism accommodation.

Funding is also available for carbon reduction projects, including solar energy.

The scheme will be run by Invest East Yorkshire Business Support Services, which provides free and confidential advice to firms.

More than 2,000 businesses have been supported by the service over the past two years, the council said.

As well as the grants there is also up to £750 available to help people start a new business and up to £1,000 for staff development.

Council leader Anne Handley said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to access government-funded support, to accelerate their growth."
