River search launched amid fears man went into water

Police are searching for a man who was reported to have entered the River Irwell in Salford.

Greater Manchester Police said they received a report from near the Irwell Street bridge at about 03:15 GMT and have appealed for the public's help to find him.

They described him as white with short brown hair and aged in his 20s.

He is said to be of average build and was last seen wearing a grey jacket and black trousers.

Det Insp Paul Davies said: "We understand how distressing this situation is and I want to reassure the wider community that officers are working closely with specialist units to find the individual and notify those involved."

He added they were "dedicating a number of resources to find him and we are continuing our enquiries to establish the circumstances of this incident".
