William and Isabel King decided to get married in North Yorkshire after Isabel fell in love with the Dales on her first visit from Switzerland

When a storm was forecast for a couple's Yorkshire Dales wedding weekend, groom William King admits he "completely ignored it".

With 90 guests due to arrive in Hawes the night before their big day, the couple were more focused on frantically sorting the last-minute details.

But high winds and heavy rain soon threatened their plans when the rivers surrounding the venue flooded, blocking roads and stranding guests.

The conditions did not dull their spirits, though, as locals pulled together to organise a convoy of 4x4s to rescue the attendees.

William, who is from North Yorkshire, moved to Switzerland in 2014, where he met his bride Isabel.

"I took her back to meet the parents in Hawes, Wensleydale, and she fell in love with the place," the 37-year-old says.

"It was really nice to see somebody who lives in such a beautiful country arrive in North Yorkshire and fall in love with the local people and the local attire.

"I think more Barbour jackets were bought that weekend than ever before!"

The couple decided to get married at Simonstone Hall and invited Isabel's Swiss family to experience Yorkshire for the first time.

Land Rovers came to the rescue after guests' rental cars became stranded

However upon their arrival on 3 October, Storm Amy was in full swing.

"It was a sea of water, there wasn't a patch of green land anywhere," William says.

"They were driving up from Manchester Airport, they would have taken the Kendal turn-off, driven on these beautiful country roads and then all of a sudden arrived to a blocked and completely out-of-bounds flooded area.

"A lot of them did try, unfortunately, to drive through it because when it was a lot lower it looked very manageable.

"There were various car rental companies who unfortunately got their cars back after they got stuck in the storms."

Conscious to get the weekend back on track, William says they "stepped to" and looked at their options.

Jake Dinsdale, from Simonstone Hall, volunteered to pick up stranded guests in his Land Rover, while Shaw Ghyll campsite also lent its 4x4 to the wedding party.

The newlyweds had a "cracking weekend" despite the flooding

"We managed to ferry them - literally - to and fro," William says.

After a few trips, the vehicles got the guests to safety, with drivers even managing to help stranded cattle on the way.

The weather cleared in time for the wedding on Saturday, and everyone had a "cracking weekend", according to the groom.

"I think with a little bit of Yorkshire spirit and a nice flat cap it was all OK," William says.

He thanked all the local shops, pubs and businesses for providing a warm welcome to his Swiss family, who had a weekend in Yorkshire they would never forget.

"You kind of just disregard Wensleydale, especially when you move to the Swiss Alps and you live in Geneva," William says.

"It's a bit of a shame to think that I ever did because it was absolutely magnificent to be there, see family and get back in all the local pubs."
