A supermarket, care home and a coffee shop could be built on the site of a former hotel in Leicester.

Aldi has submitted a planning application to Leicester City Council to knock down the former Premier Inn on Braunstone Lane East and build an Aldi supermarket, a drive-through coffee shop and a care home.

According to planning documents submitted by the applicant, the site has faced "significant vandalism" since the hotel chain left, with fires and floods on a "regular basis".

The documents state the proposals for the site could create up to 60 full-time equivalent jobs as well as a range of temporary construction roles.

The developer has submitted an outline application for the 66-bed care home and drive-through coffee shop, meaning a further reserved matters application with more details would require approval before construction could start.

The planning application for the supermarket is full, meaning no further applications would be required if the proposal were to be approved by the council.

Planning documents added: "The proposal will bring about significant environmental and visual improvements to this prominent corner site which sits at a crossroads with two of the most significant roads in the southwest part of Leicester.

"It will replace what is a currently run down site with a high quality, modern, mixed-use development with attractive landscaping."
