A "significant" number of trees will be felled or cut back at an athletics track in Leamington Spa over coming weeks, the council has said.

Warwick District Council said about a third of the poplars would be removed on safety grounds due to their proximity to Edmondscote Athletics Track which was used daily by the public.

Forestry teams have monitored the trees over past months and found there is an ever-increasing likelihood of them falling if action is not taken.

The condition of the trees has been attributed to climate change and spread of disease.

Councillor Will Roberts, portfolio holder for neighbourhood, said: "We know the felling of these magnificent trees will leave a big gap in the landscape surrounding the athletics track and field, which will be very noticeable.

"However, as custodians of this well-used facility, our priority is always to ensure the safety of the public."

He said it was hoped that removing diseased trees would help remaining trees to thrive.

Clearance work had already begun on the site, he said, and felling would begin on Tuesday.

Fencing and signs will be in place to protect the public.
