A council in Derbyshire says the next phase of a multi-million pound project to revamp a town centre is set to start next month.

The regeneration project, called Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield, will begin on 1 July and last for a year-and-a-half.

The work will start in Market Square before moving on to New Square and Rykneld Square.

But the work will bring disruption, with Chesterfield Borough Council unable to hold its annual Medieval Market in 2024 as a result.

A spokesperson for the council said while the town centre will remain open for business, there will be some "short-term disruption".

They added: “Unfortunately, we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel the Medieval Market this year, as key areas of the main market square will be undergoing improvement works.

“However, there are many more great family-friendly events taking place across the summer. We’ll also be launching a new public art project.”

Contractor Thomas Bow has been appointed to carry out the latest phase of the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project to “transform the look, feel and flow” of the squares.

Market Square will see the first work, with a new layout planned for stalls and paving, seating and lighting changes.

Work in New Square is planned to make the square more flexible for both markets and a wider range of uses, before work moves on to make Rykneld Square a green space in the shadow of the town’s famous crooked spire.

John Allen, construction director at Thomas Bow, said: “Our teams are very much looking forward to embarking on this project in the coming months.”

At the same time, contractor G F Tomlinson will carry out improvements to Corporation Street to create a new gateway to the refurbished Stephenson Memorial Hall.
