A fire has broken out at a disused former school in Birmingham.

Firefighters were called to the Clifton Road school in Balsall Heath shortly before 14:00 BST.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said the fire was affecting the first floor and roof space of the building.

Clifton Road, Hertford Road and a section of Brunswick Road have been closed while crews work at the scene.

The spokesperson said 32 firefighters and seven fire engines were sent to the incident initially, adding that “good progress” had been made.

“We are working to reduce our resources and a plan is being formulated to reopen local roads,” they added.
