A Surrey youth club has been awarded £15,000 to help provide a new youth worker, thanks to the companies building a bridge nearby.

The money will help fund the post for a year at Ash Youth Club near Guildford, with the club hoping to raise more money to make the post long-term.

VolkerFitzpatrick, the company selected by Guildford Borough Council to build a new road bridge over the railway line at Ash to replace a level crossing, has donated £5,000.

The engineering firms Tony Gee and Sword Contracts have also donated £5,000 each.

Chairman of the youth club committee and borough councillor for Ash Wharf Ward Phil Bellamy said: "It is a tremendous boost for Ash Youth Club.

"It means we can get started with a range of activities for young people in Ash. Our aim is to continue fundraising so we can increase the activities on offer and continue to employ a youth worker after the first year."

VolkerFitzpatrick's project manager, Colin Bexley, said: "I'm pleased we've been able to raise this money to help re-start activities at the Ash Youth Club.

"By the time the project is complete, we will have been in Ash for over a year and have got to know the area well. We're glad to be able to give something which will continue to benefit Ash after the project is finished."
