A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a car smashed into a primary school.

The car crashed through a wall at Beacon Primary School in Everton, Liverpool, just before 08:30 BST, Merseyside Police said.

The force said the arrested 39-year-old woman from Walton had also been held on suspicion of careless driving and had been "taken to a police station".

North West Ambulance Service said the car's driver and a passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A police representative said the school on Heyworth Street was being assessed for any structural damage and remained closed, but the surrounding roads were now open.

Earlier, Dan Sudbury, whose nine-year-old son goes to the school, told BBC Radio Merseyside they heard the crash.

"We heard the bang at half past eight," he said.

"Ten more minutes and there would have been a lot more kids in there.

"They've had a lucky escape."

Joanne Duxbury, who said her seven-year-old son was also a pupil, told the BBC the car had crashed into a classroom.

"It's just worrying what could have happened," she said.

"You think how lucky they have been this morning."
