A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder after a fatal stabbing in Newark.

James Cook, 40, was found unresponsive in Castle Gate at 23:53 BST on Wednesday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of emergency services, said Nottinghamshire Police.

Brandon Byrne was arrested a few hours later and was charged with Mr Cook's murder on Friday, the force added.

Mr Byrne, of Winston Court in Newark, remains in custody and will appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday.
