A serving police officer has denied assaulting a man with mental health issues while on duty.

Glen Calvert, of Essex Police, is accused of attacking the man while loading him into a police van in West Mersea on 19 May.

A brief hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court was told the 53-year-old constable was attending concerns for a man's welfare at the time.

Mr Calvert, of Ipswich Road, Colchester, denies assault by beating and is due to face a trial at Colchester Magistrates' Court on 11 April 2025.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been investigating the incident since it was reported.

Mr Calvert is also accused of assaulting the man a second time when he removed him from the police van.

Essex Police said it had since placed him on restricted duties.
