Man arrested over rape in supermarket car park

The incident occurred at the bottom of the slope in the Asda car park, police said

A man has been arrested after a woman reported being raped in a supermarket car park.

The incident took place in Asda car park at the Eastgate Centre, Basildon, at 04:00 BST on Sunday, Essex Police said.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening and taken to custody for questioning.

"We continue our inquiries and would like to thank those who have contacted us so far with information," Det Insp Stewart Eastbrook said.

The officer said he was aware of posts on social media reporting another incident where two women were followed earlier that night.

"We are currently working to establish the details of that incident and the circumstances around it," he added.
