Rail disruption after engineering works overrun

West Midlands Railway apologised and said services were disrupted

Rail services through Wolverhampton have been disrupted due to overrunning engineering works, West Midlands Railway has said.

Passengers are advised to leave extra time before travelling and check journey planners, with Transport for Wales trains also affected.

Services have been cancelled between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury, with replacement coaches running between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury.

On the Walsall to Wolverhampton line, services are running between Walsall and Birmingham New Street, with tickets accepted on West Midlands Metro between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Meanwhile, live travel updates reported "major problems" on Birmingham New Street lines, the Shrewsbury via Telford route and around Walsall and Wolverhampton.

All passengers have been urged to plan ahead, check travel information, and to claim compensation through Delay Repay if delayed by 15 minutes or more.

West Midlands Railway said on its website: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Services via Crewe have also been affected by major signalling work in the area, according to National Rail.

Several lines are affected as engineering work takes place in and around the town between Christmas and new year.

New Year's Day timetables

An amended timetable will be in place from Monday 30 December until New Year's Day with all West Midlands Railway lines affected.

On Monday and New Year's Eve, trains between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury are affected.

And on New Year's Day, a special timetable based on Sunday service frequency will be in operation on Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Coventry routes.

Trains serving Herefordshire and Worcestershire will also be subject to an amended timetable and will start later.

Areas affected include Hereford, Great Malvern, Lichfield Trent Valley, Redditch and Bromsgrove, Worcester, Kidderminster, Stratford-upon-Avon and Stourbridge.
